When Trader Trove, the beloved Gold Coast homewares store changed hands, proud new owners Lisa and her family connected with Murals for Change to collaborate on an interior mural artwork, bringing new life to the space. As long time lovers of Montana’s work, the Trader Trove team worked together on an artwork concept to capture the essence of their team and the energy they wanted to manifest throughout their new and exciting journey.
After an incredibly testing journey supporting their young son through cancer recovery, owner Lisa realised how important it is to navigate business (and life) from the heart and the deep-felt impact of choosing joy every day.
Montana’s completed mural explores the experience of parenting two young boys and how nourishing life with positivity encourages growth and strength. Referencing Murals for Change’s iconic sunflower motif, our shared values and contribution to the Trader Trove journey become the collaborative creative legacy, inspiring and spreading joy to those who pass through the space.
We wanted to connect with Lisa to learn more about her journey and share everything she’s growing with our community.
PLEASE TELL US ABOUT WHO YOU ARE AND WHAT YOU DO?
I am Lisa Maynard, my husband Jayd and I own and operate Trader Trove, a leading, heart-centred business that strives to support local and international artisans. I am the Creative Director here and my role allows me to create the vision for our store working in collaboration with our artists and marketing team. I have a Bachelor in Creative Arts and love the process of designing furniture knowing each piece is going to be handmade with unique intricacies. Watching ideas transform into tangible items are quite special. Recently I shared this process with my children on an upcoming collection and asked them to make some decisions during the design process which was a fun experience.
SHARE SOME MORE ABOUT THE JOURNEY TO TRADER TROVE. WE LOVE WHAT YOU’RE DOING AND WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT WHERE YOU’VE BEEN.
I was introduced to Avalon, the founder of Trader Trove back in 2019, we shared a beautiful connection and I opened my heart sharing my son’s battle with Cancer and the importance of slow living and taking time to enjoy the simple pleasures in each and every day. I felt so inspired by Trader Trove that it was not just a business but a space with heart, depth, and soul, it provided connection, love, and creativity. Fast forward to 2020 and under the Lunar Eclipse Avalon handed me the keys to Trader Trove, I felt truly honoured and blessed to continue her mission.
YOU HAVE SUCH A BEAUTIFUL AND WARM SPACE. WHAT IS IT ABOUT INTERIORS, FURNISHINGS AND ART OBJECTS THAT YOU’RE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT?
I believe that your home should be your temple, when you walk in your front door you should feel softer, more relaxed and you should smile. Every room has an opportunity to create a mood, using the senses combined with textures and colours you can use aesthetics to create a meaningful space that ultimately is an extension of who you are. It is important that my family feels good when they walk in the door, that no matter what kind of day they have had I know when they walk inside our home, they will breathe a sigh of relief. When people walk inside our shop, they smell candles burning, they see an array of colour and their faces light up, they feel welcomed and sometimes they do not want to leave.
WHAT DOES ART MEAN TO YOU AND WHY IS IT CRUCIAL TO SUPPORT LOCAL CREATIVES, ESPECIALLY IN TIMES LIKE THESE?
I am passionate about all forms of art and expression; I believe our world would be incredibly dull without it. Having worked in the performing arts industry I understand the importance of collaboration and supporting all our creatives. I am overjoyed that I can invite local artists to showcase their work and share with the wider community their stories, educating our customers about the process, the designs and the time behind each piece is important to me.
WHAT DOES YOUR MONTANA LOWER ARTWORK MEAN TO YOU? WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO INVITE MURALS FOR CHANGE TO ADD TO THE TRADER TROVE SPACE AND LEGACY?
I have followed Montana and Murals for Change for a while now and I have always been inspired by charity work and community events. I began my own not-for-profit before my son was diagnosed with Cancer and my vision was to support everyday people in the community, I would take my son to visit local retirement homes and have him hand out flowers, I began event planning in my spare time to raise money for locals and different charities.
When I came across Murals for Change, I was reminded of my own projects and it resonated deeply with me and reminded me that we, as human beings have so much to share and I believe every individual has a role to play in making our world a happier place. I invited Montana to support her vision and artivism and to create a symbol for Trader Trove that my children taught me and that is simply to ‘Choose Joy’, to follow what makes you smile and do your best to make others smile.
CAN YOU SHARE WHY THIS EXPERIENCE WAS SPECIAL?
This experience was special because it represented so much more than ‘choosing joy’, it was a symbol of resilience and bravery that my children taught us. During chemotherapy we had some very tough days and our boys unknowingly became our role models teaching us to find pleasure in simple everyday moments and that we have the power to choose joy. This mural symbolised the beginning of our new life and our message for the world, we hope it encourages people to take a breath and find joy within the small, simple moments.
LOOKING TO THE FUTURE, IS THERE ANYTHING WE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT?
We are working on creating and designing limited edition ranges to be released with the sole intent of supporting different charities throughout the year. We are looking forward to our first event planed in September so stay tuned.
WHAT DID YOU LOVE ABOUT THE EXPERIENCE?
I loved connecting with Montana and sharing insights of life, motherhood, and visions for a more meaningful world. It was a beautiful experience witnessing an artist express their ideas literally on a blank wall and creating an image that connects and conveys meaning with a purpose.
TELL US ONE THING THAT MAKES YOU HAPPY?
Looking at the sunflowers by Montana makes me happy! What brings me the most joy in life is listening to my children laugh, watching them play and the simple pleasures of life, the feeling of the sun on my skin, looking at the ocean, taking in all the intricate details from our surroundings and particular nature.
HOW HAS THE MURAL CHANGED THE SPACE?
The mural has changed our space by adding not only a bright, fun and happy image but it has encouraged our staff to take a look at not only the beauty but to think about the meaning and the message, that is what is special. Watching our customers stepping into our courtyard and reading the message has been a conversation starter and I love listening to everyone share their experience and interpretation of what choosing joy for them means.
"Having the opportunity to work with aligned business’ and bring fresh energy and heart to their space, while connecting their customers to an incredibly hopeful message is a joy. Every sunflower is different and iconic to the energy of each space, but this definitely has to be one of my favourite places to see my sunflowers so far!"
