When we launched our workshop program, Alex from Wildflower Holistic Services became our first guest, first workshop collaborator and now one of MFC’s dear friends. As a Psychologist, Art Therapist & Trauma Sensitive Yoga Therapist with a focus on holistic health, Alex has changed many lives with a unique combination of clinical and alternative medicines.
Wildflower Holistic Services was created from a desire to generate sustainable solutions and practice healthcare in a way that felt authentic, holistic, nurturing, and promoted all areas of wellness – the mind, body and spirit. So with this in mind, Alex and her sister, Rebecca embarked on a journey to create a service and product that encompassed their dreams because when there is no sun, sunflowers turn towards each other and radiate the power from within to support one another. This is wholeheartedly what Wildflowers is all about, creating a nurturing and safe space, to see, hear and celebrate each individual as they embark on their journey.
We spoke to Alex to dive deeper into her why and what’s happened on the way.
PLEASE TELL US ABOUT WHO YOU ARE AND WHAT YOU DO?
Hey, I am Alex and I am the co-founder of Wildflower Holistic Services. I am a soul driven woman who is super passionate about shifting the way we view and treat mental health and disability. I feel one of my roles within this lifetime is to revamp outdated structures and forms and bring life to a space where many healing modalities collide to provide greater outcomes for the individuals I journey with. At present I am a psychologist, art therapist and a trauma sensitive yoga therapist, yet I feel those are only labels and what I really do is see the gifts in others through authentic genuine connections.
YOU WERE INCREDIBLE PRESENTING OUR AUGUST ONLINE ART WORKSHOP. WHAT IS IT ABOUT ART, MINDFULNESS AND MENTAL HEALTH THAT YOU'RE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT?
For myself I really feel that art allows you to express a level of depth that the human language has yet to find the words for and it is one of the reasons why I am so passionate about people engaging in art as means to support one’s mental wellbeing. Most often than not, it allows an individual to be in a mindful state, free of judgment and distractions, which means when you are completely in that moment you lose sense of what is around you, what is going on and potentially the heaviness you may carry inside, it allows you to feel free.
SHARE SOME MORE ABOUT THE JOURNEY TO WILDFLOWER HOLISTIC SERVICES. WE LOVE WHAT YOU'RE DOING AND WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY.
I have had the dream for Wildflower Holistic Services for many years and it is a dream that I kept coming back to. I took the leap and Wildflowers was birthed late 2019, yet I feel and know we are still in its early infancy. Wildflower Holistic Services was created from a desire to generate sustainable solutions and practice healthcare in a way that felt authentic, holistic, nurturing, and promoted all areas of wellness -the mind, body and spirit. So with this in mind, my sister and I embarked on a journey to create a service and product that encompassed our dreams because when there is no sun, sunflowers turn towards each other and radiate the power from within to support one another. I am very much the dreamer, birther and creative muse within our relationship and my sister, Bec is the don’t think, get shit done kinda gal so we balance each other out really well.
WHAT DOES ART MEAN TO YOU AND WHY IS IT CRUCIAL TO SUPPORT LOCAL CREATIVES, ESPECIALLY IN TIMES LIKE THESE?
For myself art is a way of expressing one’s self. Art allows you to journey to another dimension, when you let it, and explore the depths of your soul. Art can give a voice to how you are feeling or what you view, when words cannot do it justice.
Which is why I feel it’s crucial to support local creatives because, art is more than just art – it is one person’s heart work and to gain insight into one person’s heart, is a real gift, something I feel that people do not acknowledge enough.
"Wildflowers grow in and under barren, dry and adverse conditions, yet they grow and bloom to be beautiful and unique despite the adversity that they may have faced. We see humans to be really similar to that of wildflowers, we all have shit we go through or shit that we carry, yet there is so much beauty and something to treasure in every human."

WHY DID YOU WANT TO COLLABORATE WITH MURALS FOR CHANGE? CAN YOU SHARE WHY THIS EXPERIENCE WAS SPECIAL?
At Wildflowers we are driven to continually work with purpose driven individuals and organisations who want to and are willing to co-create the future our hearts know is possible. For us, Murals for Change and Montana was one of those organisations and individuals. Not only was there the mutual love for art and the use of art as a means to explore topical and complex situations, there was an air of authenticity that was so real and really felt by myself that I knew we just needed to collaborate. I also feel that’s why the experience was so special, because it flowed naturally due to the shared authenticity and knowledge that each person was important and had something equal to share.
WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE WAY TO WIND DOWN, RE-CENTRE OR STAY POSITIVE? ARE THERE ANY MINDFULNESS TOOLS OR RESOURCES YOU RECOMMEND?
For myself I really love reading about what other people are doing out in the world and how they are doing it. From social enterprises, conscious entrepreneurs, start-ups and non for profits, I love hearing about the problems they are aiming to solve, seeing their passion and dedication to the cause and their really go-getter attitude. It really warms my heart and brings me down to earth when I may be feeling overwhelmed with how we can do X-Y-Z.
WHY IS COMMUNITY SO IMPORTANT TO THE WILDFLOWER HOLISTIC SERVICES MISSION?
At Wildflowers we have a deep seeded curiosity of how we can work together now to reimagine the future and transcend outdated structures and forms that no longer serve us and pave a way for the next generation of changemakers. For this to occur, community is where it is at. Community collaboration is definitely seen as an essential contribution of ours to be of best service to our community and create the change needed on a large scale to change the way mental health and disability are viewed and treated in the world. And the thing we love about it even more is that whilst we are all about wanting to service a community, it also indirectly creates a community whereby people come together, share stories and experiences, feel heard and understood and most importantly do not feel alone.
LOOKING TO THE FUTURE, IS THERE ANYTHING WE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT?
We have big things planned for Wildflowers which is really exciting, however a couple of things on the not so far horizon include:
- Recycle your weighted blanket which is about to launch in October. What this means is when you outgrow your weighted blanket you can send it back to us, as opposed to it ending up in landfill and we will re-purpose it as we see fit through either re-homing the blanket or recycling the materials, allowing you to do your bit for the plant and in return you will receive a discount off your next purchase.
- Dollar for a Cause is also launching in October. $1 dollar for every individual we see, is donated to a cause. The difference being, the individual has a choice as to where their money is donated from the six community initiatives we have chosen. We see it as an opportunity to really open up conversation about important topics including climate change, supporting the arts, respecting and honouring first nations individuals, eradicating domestic violence, poverty and putting an end to suicide. As well as provide an opportunity for individuals to contribute to something greater.
- We are also exploring the social enterprise space, yet I am sure like you guys at Murals with the non for-profit status, with little experience in the social enterprise space, it has been a little bit of a minefield to navigate at the moment however we will get there.
